Collage of Judy Garland’s music and autobiographical tapes, made by marta talvet
gather collective

Judy Garland (born 1922) was a widely celebrated American singer, known for her role as Dorothy in the iconic film Wizard of Oz, later having a stage career as a singer, actress as well as hosting her own TV series. Despite having a brilliant career she is known to have had a tragic life, suffering from abuse in childhood by her mother and later in her marriages. At the age of forty-one she recorded autobiographical tapes in which she tells the story of her life. Mixed together with her numerous music recordings including duets with Peggy Lee and Barbra Streisand, this collage-form radio episode is exploring the tapestry of a singer’s voice both on and off stage, taking a listen to the stranger underlayers and edges of performativity, and the sound palette of the intensely affect-loaded Hollywood music of mid-twentieth century with its inseparable extremes of heart-on-a(n expensively shimmering) sleeve romance bordering with tragedy, and loudly buoyant entertainment blown up into a world where show must always go on, accompanied by the evershining sound of the brass-heavy orchestra.

marta talvet is a musician part of the gather collective, based in Berlin. She is part of the duo Unsuspecting Carpenters. Marta studied semiotics and culture theory in Tartu, Estonia, where she is from and is currently finishing her studies of music composition at the UdK.
