A sequence of recordings on vinyl of Carnatic musicians made in the 1960s and 1970s I recently found in my mother’s garage: N Ramani, Salem S. Jayalakshmi, Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer, Lalgudi G. Jayaraman and Sivananda Vijayalakshmi.

This episode serves as an entry point into the current controversy rippling through the Indian music world prompted by T. M. Krishna, a high profile Canartic singer and researcher, writer and social activist who has been highly critical of caste and class prejudice. Krishna was recently awarded the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award by the Madras Music Academy, who are effectively the Establishment for this form.
