This weeks show is a selection of contemporary piano pieces chosen by composer Hugh O'Neill. These pieces reflect the musical and stylistic influences that have helped shape an individual approach to learning composition through the use of piano as a reduced playground for the development of musical material and structures. The piano serves as a set of boundaries that set the music apart from ensemble writing, forcing the composer to express ideas within these boundaries, forcing compromises and solutions that might not otherwise have been thought of.
